A Brief History of Time
In the early 1940s, the Austrian economist, Joseph Schumpeter posited the construct of Creative Destruction, whereby existing business models and structures are always undergoing transformation often from exogenous forces that replace the old with the new. This process is ongoing and not restricted or our times. Alfred Tennyson, famously wrote, “the old order changeth, yielding place to new,” in his 1878 seminal work, the Idylls of the King.
In the turmoil following World War II, W. Edwards Deming, the father of quality management, helped transform an utterly destroyed Japan into the world’s second largest economy with a reputation for excellence. Of course, there are many other examples, including the transformation of the former East Germany as it was integrated with West Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Our New Realities
The oil and gas industry has been on a collision course with Creative Destruction for a number of years now. Pundits lament future supply and demand, commodity price volatility, alternative energy sources, and a host of political and societal aspects of this global industry.
